Fighting Start to the Season for Ultimate Motorsport

Greg Mansell and Miguel Molina have had a dramatic start to the 2009 World Series by Renault Season with both Ultimate Motorsport cars amongst the fastest cars lapping the Barcelona circuit, with the Spanish driver setting the fastest lap of the race, plenty of overtaking and dramas throughout the 45 minute race.

Miguel Molina (#4 Ultimate Motorsport) set the fastest time in the SuperPole qualifying for opening meeting of the 2009 World Series by Renault. However the celebrations were cut short when the team spotted a problem when they had mistakenly fitted Molina’s car with his teammate’s tyres at the start of the session.  Team Manager Colin Morgan immediately reported the mistake to the race stewards who took the decision to disallow Molina’s SuperPole times. The Spanish driver duly lined up in 12th place for the opening race of the 2009 season, three places ahead of teammate Greg Mansell (#3 Ultimate Motorsport).

Monaco, 21 April 2009: A1 Team Monaco is ready to get back to business at Brands Hatch Circuit next week for the penultimate round of the 2008/9 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport (1-3 May 2009). With a top five finish in the Sprint race in Portugal and a potential podium denied to driver Clivio Piccione in the Feature event, Team Monaco has its sights set firmly on improving its current ninth place in the Championship table.

One of the most iconic sporting venues in the world, Brands Hatch has laid claim to being ‘the busiest race circuit in Europe’. Having undergone a series of major improvements in recent years, the Kent circuit now attracts some of the biggest international events on the motorsport calendar and has hosted three A1GP races to date.

The inaugural A1GP World Cup of Motorsport meeting took place at the circuit in September 2005 in front of 72,000 expectant motor racing fans. The second meeting was the 2006/07 season’s championship finale and it was the first time a home nation won its home event in the series. Last season the venue held the first A1GP championship race to go to the wire in the final event on the calendar.

Starting out as a dirt track motorcycle circuit in 1926, Brands Hatch has been characterised by its natural amphitheatre which affords excellent views of the racing action from the spectator banking and grandstands. The circuit has witnessed a number of significant moments in motorsport history including Ayrton Senna’s first car win, Nigel Mansell’s debut F1 victory and James Toseland’s only double win in World Superbikes.

A dramatic second race of the opening weekend of the 2009 World Series by Renault saw Greg Mansell score his first championship point as the rain that had threatened all morning came down at the mid point of the race to shake up the order.

Portimão, 12 April 2009: A day of mixed fortunes ended A1 Team Monaco’s Portuguese charge this weekend. A solid 5th place finish in the Sprint race was over shadowed by the denial of a potential podium in the Feature event this afternoon. The results of round six of the 2008/9 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport mean that Monaco remains in 9th position in the championship, with 27 points and six Top Ten finishes.

 Clivio Piccione made a great start to the 15-laps Sprint race this morning, jumping from his 10th grid position to 5th place by the end of the first lap. The safety car came out after a coming together by New Zealand and Germany, but after Monaco made its mandatory pitstop on lap five, Clivio rejoined the action retaining 5th place. Keeping extremely close to the rear wing of Vitantonio Liuzzi, Clivio engaged in an exciting battle for position with Team India. He continued to fill the rear view mirrors of pole-sitters Italy when a Red Flag raised with only 3 laps to go ended the running prematurely. Netherlands took the Sprint race victory from teams Ireland, Portugal, Italy and Team Monaco coming home in the points once again, in 5th position.

An unfortunatley loss of power caused Tom Tunstall to come off at Barnds Hatch in the 2nd practiice of the day which left the Hardinge, Dolan, Xpresscoffee team with serious probelms trying to get a bike ready for Race one on Monday.

Plater & the HM Plant Honda team put in an excellent performance Roll and has worked his way up through the starting grid for Mondays race.

Plater crashed his HM Plant Honda at Druids in the opening session, but was able to get back to the pits with less than ten minutes for the team to rebuild the bike and get him out in time for session two.

Ultimate to concentrate on World Series by Renault glory in 2009
 
The Wellingborough based Ultimate Group have announced their intention to concentrate on securing the 2009 World Series by Renault title with Miguel Molina and Greg Mansell and as part of this long term strategy have confirmed that Ultimate Motorsport will not be contesting the British F3 International Series this season.  
Ultimate made British Formula 3 history in 2008 when Michael Devaney won both rounds at Snetterton to claim the first ever Formula 3 win for the Mygale chassis and the first non Dallara victory since 2005.  It was also the first win for the team in just their second season in the series. 

“This was an extremely difficult decision but with the current state of the world economic climate, every company has to cut their cloth accordingly,” said Team Principle Barry Walsh.  “We are all extremely proud of what we achieved in just two seasons of British F3 and we certainly don’t rule out a return to the category in the future.  However our World Series team USR has been setting the pace in pre season testing and with Miguel Molina and Greg Mansell we have a good shot at both the team and driver’s title; so this is where our focus for 2009 must lie.  Looking to the future we are also planning to contest the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 from 2010 to run alongside our World Series team.  Ultimate will continue to provide aspiring young drivers with a clear motorsport ladder from karting right up to the ultimate goal of Formula One.”
